Cumbria Museum Consortium

Cumbria Museum Consortium (CMC) comprises Tullie House, the Wordsworth Trust and Lakeland Arts Trust. CMC came together in 2011 to create a partnership to bridge the geographical, physical and philosophical distances between Cumbria’s rich museum collections and enable the people of Cumbria to experience and enjoy them better. The Consortium has established a strong ethic of joint working and is well placed to path find.

Cumbria’s New Expressions commission will enable an artist to create new work inspired by their collections, with the specific aim of involving audiences across all three venues. Led by Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum in Kendal, where Lakeland Arts has extensive experience of commissioning and working with artists, the project will encompass Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle and Dove Cottage, Grasmere.

As part of New Expressions’ mentoring support scheme, staff at CMC worked with independent curator Judith King to select their artist, Uta Kogelsberger; an artist whose practice embeds community participation and whose commission will bring to life similarities and differences between the CMC’s museums and collections by exploring the surprising, unexpected links between them.

Cumbria Museums Consortium is part of Arts Council England’s network of Major Partner Museums.
