Sounding out Devon

Chris Watson, one of the world's leading wildlife recorders, is preparing to bring sounds from rural Devon into the heart of RAMM. When using the stairway linking RAMM’s garden entrance to the Down to Earth gallery, visitors in 2015 will be treated to soundscapes from nearby coast and countryside. Chris is currently capturing sounds from rockpools and estuaries, farmland and meadow, pebblebed heathlands and oak woodlands. Four seasonal recordings from each location will be used to create a changing soundscape evocative of Devon’s diverse ecosystems.

A founder member of New Expressions, RAMM is building on the success of the commissioning profile established within New Expressions 2 to engage with technology to create a site or collection specific work. RAMM worked with independent creative programmer Vivienne Gaskin to shortlist Chris Watson. A former member of Cabaret Voltaire, the BAFTA-winning Watson has worked on BBC programmes including Frozen Planet and the Life of Birds and more recently with Radio 4.

In partnership with Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, RAMM is part of Arts Council England’s network of Major Museum Partners.
